Pedestrian dies after being struck by commercial vehicle near Duncan

A pedestrian was killed Monday morning after being struck by a commercial vehicle on the Trans-Canada Highway near Allenby Road, one kilometre south of Duncan.

North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP were called about 11:25 a.m. and arrived to find the vehicle stopped just past the intersection and an injured person lying on the ground.

The person was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver is co-operating with police.

Police are working to determine the cause of the crash, and Commercial Vehicle and Traffic Enforcement is also involved.

“Investigators are interested in any witnesses who saw the driving behaviour of this vehicle prior to it travelling through the intersection,” said B.C. RCMP Sgt. Chris Manseau.

Both northbound lanes of the highway remained closed as of 1:30 p.m., with a detour available via Allenby and Boys roads.
