An early-morning fire at a house in Campbell River sent one person to hospital on Sunday.

The home in the 3700 block of South Island Highway, south of Jubilee Parkway, was ablaze when crews arrived shortly after 3:36 a.m., fire chief Thomas Doherty said. The fire had made its way through the roof and was spreading quickly through the living areas of the one-level home.

“There were three people that arrived at the home and discovered smoke and fire in the attic space, and were able to get out of the home,” Doherty said.

One person was injured and taken to hospital by ambulance, he said. No information was available Monday on their condition.

Damage to the house is “quite substantial,” Doherty said. “Given the age of the home and the extent of damage, I would estimate probably [it’s a tear-down].”

Crews were at the scene until about 9 a.m.

Doherty said investigators returned Monday and had yet to determine the cause.
