Victoria police are looking for witnesses after a man allegedly stole a large stuffed animal from a memorial created to honour the 215 children found last week in unmarked graves at the former Kamloops residential school.

Shortly before 7 p.m. Monday, a woman reported a large, green stuffed alligator missing from the memorial outside her home in the 200-block of Russell Street in Victoria West.

Officers decided to purchase a new stuffed animal and children’s toys to add to the memorial.

Police are trying to identify the suspect, who is described as a 20- to 30-year-old white man, about five feet eight inches tall with a heavy build.

Anyone with information is asked to call VicPD at 250-995-7654, extension 1 or report anonymously by calling the Greater Victoria Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
