No one was hurt early Thursday when a fire ripped through a structure that had been built in a homeless camp off the Patricia Bay Highway.

Flames up to nine metres high were reported, with propane and other substances fuelling the blaze in a treed area at the corner of the highway and McKenzie Avenue, near Rainbow Park.

Saanich fire crews were called about 3:45 a.m.

“It’s an awkward spot so we had to deploy a lot of hose to get to it,” said Platoon Capt. David Elder.
