There will be no free rides aboard city buses on New Year’s Eve this year.

B.C. Transit said in a statement it is continuing to follow the guidance of the provincial health officer and WorkSafe B.C to provide the safest possible service for customers and drivers.

Decisions about scheduling and service levels are made by the Victoria Regional Transit Commission, the agency said, and B.C. Transit will continue to support its partners on all scheduling and service initiatives.

On the Lower Mainland, TransLink said it was also ending its long-standing tradition of free public transit for New Year’s Eve revellers because of the pandemic.

B.C. Transit said it will operate normal schedules over the holidays.
