A cyclist’s lack of a proper helmet may lead to a mountain bike owner getting his ride back.

Nanaimo RCMP are asking for the public’s help in identifying the owner of a bike they seized.

Officers on patrol around Uplands Drive and Hammond Bay Road in Nanaimo took the blue, Norco Fluid FS3, with a large frame, from a 35-year-old man on July 9 after they stopped him for riding it without a proper helmet.

The man, well known to them, was evasive with his answers and confrontational, and the officers determined the bike was most likely stolen. Despite a barrage of profanities aimed at them, the officers seized the bike in the public interest.

The officers checked the bike’s serial number with most of the bike shops in Nanaimo, but with no success.

“If this bike had been registered at Project 529, it would have been returned to the rightful owner by now,” said spokesman Cst. Gary O’Brien. “It only takes five minutes of your time to register your bike, and it’s time well spent.”

If you think you know whose bike it is, call Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345, and quote file # 2021-25338.
