Nanaimo property taxes to jump 5.1% for 2019

Nanaimo property owners can expect property taxes to rise by 5.1 per cent for 2019.

The increase would see property taxes rise by $102 on an average home valued at $464,405, said the City of Nanaimo.

There will also be increases for user fees: four per cent for sewer, 7.5 per cent for water, and three per cent for solid waste pickup.

Nanaimo council passed three readings of its provisional financial plan bylaw on Monday. It is expected to be passed in January.

Next year’s budget allows for $144 million to pay for operations, and $56.6 million for projects.

It includes hiring four firefighters and two bylaw enforcement officers next year. Another 15 new RCMP officers are expected to be hired within five years.
