A Victoria man has died in Mexico under circumstances which are still unclear.

Aubrey Brown died suddenly last week, his Richardson Street neighbours said Friday.

“Our thoughts and sympathies are with the family and friends of the Canadian citizen who passed away in Mexico,” Guillaume Bérubé, a spokesperson for Global Affairs Canada, wrote in an email to the Times Colonist.

“Consular officials are providing consular assistance to the family during this difficult time and are in contact with local authorities to gather more information.”

Due to the provisions of the Privacy Act, no further information can be disclosed at this time, Bérubé said.

One neighbour described Brown as a great neighbour and friend.

“He was an extremely kind and gentle soul,” said the woman, who wished to remain anonymous.

A source told the Times Colonist that the 82-year-old was killed and that his family are having trouble getting information from the authorities.

“His home was ransacked and burglarized and they found him some distance from his car,” the source said.

“The perpetrators tried to make it look like an accident.”

The Canadian Consular Agency in Puerto Vallarta would not comment on the case.

Brown lived in Victoria for about 30 years.

It’s believed he spent his winters in Mexico.
