More potential COVID exposures reported in Island schools

Eighteen Vancouver Island schools — including seven in Greater Victoria — are now on Island Health’s list of outbreaks or clusters of COVID-19 in schools, up from 10 on Monday.

Island Health says a cluster is when there are two or more confirmed cases of COVID-19 in a school within a 14-day period and there is evidence of transmission within the school.

Eighteen Vancouver Island schools — including seven in Greater Victoria — are now on Island Health’s list of outbreaks or clusters of COVID-19 in schools, up from 10 on Monday.

In Greater Victoria, potential exposures have been reported at Sir James Douglas Elementary, Tillicum Community School, Cloverdale Traditional Elementary, Quadra Elementary, Torquay Elementary, École Macaulay, Gordon Head Middle School and École Victor-Brodeur.

Island Health says a cluster is when there are two or more confirmed cases of COVID-19 in a school within a 14-day period and there is evidence of transmission within the school.

In Saanich School District, there is a notice of possible exposure at Deep Cove Elementary, while in the Sooke School District, École Poirier had exposure events up to Sept. 23.

In the mid and north Island, there are potential exposures at Mt. Prevost and Tansor elementary schools in Duncan, Pleasant Valley and Cinnabar Valley elementary schools in Nanaimo, as well as Brooklyn Elementary in Comox and E.J. Dunn in Port Alberni.

In Campbell River, both École Phoenix Middle School and Campbell River Christian School have potential exposures.

Close contacts are notified directly and provided guidance.

Island Health said no action is required unless parents are contacted by public health or school officials. Children should continue to attend school unless public health officials have directly suggested otherwise through a phone call or letter.
