The suspense is mounting now that veteran competitors Glenn and Andrea Dixon of Mill Bay have delivered their giant pumpkin entry to the Saanich Fairgrounds in preparation for Sunday’s weigh-in.

Ian and Rhonda Robinson of Brentwood Bay also have a contender, which they estimate is about 800 pounds.

Glenn Dixon figures his pumpkin is 700 to 800 pounds.

The test comes on Sunday at the 1 p.m. weigh-in at the Saanich Fair.

Pumpkins can lose some weight when they’ve been harvested and are waiting to be judged.

“You never know until it gets on the scale,” Dixon said. “I think it is going to be close.”

He is no stranger to pumpkin contests. He’s been a contender for 15 years.

“I’ve grown a pumpkin over 1,000 pounds for nine years in a row.”

The Saanich Fair, which runs today, Sunday and Monday, is early in the pumpkin-harvesting season. Dixon said his entry had more growing to do.

The pandemic has put some competitions on hold, but Dixon is looking forward to entering another big squash in the Oct. 2 contest at Krause Berry Farm and Estate Winery in Langley.
