A Victoria man shot and injured by police at Royal Jubilee Hospital’s emergency department Monday morning is now in custody.

Kevin James Stevenson had his bail revoked during a brief court appearance from hospital on Tuesday.

The 34-year-old pleaded guilty on March 2 to assault causing bodily harm to a nurse in early November.

The matter is under investigation and it’s not known whether Stevenson will face charges in relation to the most recent incident.

On Monday, officers were already at the hospital at 5:30 a.m, dealing with an unrelated matter when they were asked to help with a man brandishing a weapon in the emergency area.

Police found Stevenson and tried to subdue him with a less-lethal conductive energy weapon, or Taser. In the course of the incident, an officer shot him. No officers were injured during the incident and major crimes unit detectives are investigating.

Stevenson first came before the courts on Nov. 5 after being charged with assault causing bodily harm to a nurse. He was released on conditions which included not going to the Royal Jubilee Hospital except during a medical emergency. If he had to go to the hospital, he was required to contact protective services to let them know he was there.

He was also prohibited from having contact with several members of the nursing staff and was not allowed to have any weapons, ammunition or knives.

On March 2, Stevenson entered a guilty plea in integrated court. The court, which deals with offenders with substance abuse issues and/or mental illness, ordered a pre-sentence report and a psychiatric report to assist at his sentencing.

Stevenson’s next court appearance has been scheduled for April 13.

The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. is conducting an investigation into the shooting and asks anyone with information to call the witness line at 1-855-446-8477 or use the online contact form at iiobc.ca/contact-us.

The IIO investigates all police-related incidents that result in serious harm or death.
