RCMP are looking for witnesses to a possible serious assault in downtown Nanaimo last month.

A 37-year-old man who had recently arrived in the city was tended to by the B.C. Ambulance Service early July 20 and taken to hospital. He had been spotted with an injury by a passerby, and his condition didn’t at first seem to be too serious, police said.

But investigation through the ensuing weeks by medical staff led police to believe the man could have been the victim of an assault.

He is still in hospital in serious condition.

Police think the man might have been involved in an alteration between 11 p.m. on July 19 and 1 a.m. on July 2o. Officers would like to see any video or dashcam footage taken during that time in the area bordered by Front Street, Terminal Avenue, Comox Road and Esplanade Street.

Call Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345 with any information.
