A man has died after the vehicle he was in left the Island Highway and hit a power pole, snapping it in half.

Oyster River Fire Chief Bruce Green said the fire department was called about 2:45 a.m. to a site in Black Creek, about 20 kilometres north of Courtenay.

Green said the man was deceased when crews arrived.

Going to such incidents is very difficult, he said.

Power was not lost in the area despite the damaged pole.

Green said crews shut the highway down right after arriving.

He said police kept the road closed for several hours while they investigated.
