Victoria police have arrested a man in a random attack they investigated as a hate crime.

Wednesday’s arrest followed a June 19 incident in which a Black man was assaulted on a city bus.

Patrol officers were flagged down that day by two men in the 1100 block of Johnson Street. One of the men told officers he had just been struck by a stranger.

The attack was captured on a B.C. Transit video. It showed a man rise from a seat and, without warning, strike the victim just after he entered the bus. Other passengers intervened and shoved the attacker off the bus.

The victim did not require medical attention.

At the time, VicPD called the attack “a potential hate crime.”

The arrest came after police asked the public to help identify the man in the video.
