Victoria police are looking for witnesses after a man went on a crime spree early Thursday, assaulting an officer and smashing windows at several businesses.

It’s believed the episode began about 4:30 a.m. in Centennial Square when a bloodied man wiped himself off on a City of Victoria employee’s back. The man then left the square and went to the 500-block of Johnson Street, where he broke a window.

Police began to search for him at that point.

The suspect then damaged a vehicle before wiping more blood on a city garbage truck. He then fled to the 1300-block of Government Street, where he broke windows at two more businesses.

When police found him, he refused to surrender and assaulted an officer. A conducted-energy weapon was used to subdue the man.

In addition to assault charges, the man is facing three counts of mischief under $5,000 and one count of mischief over $5,000.

Call Victoria police at 250-995-7654, extension 1, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) with any information.

A man was arrested last month for breaking up to 14 windows in the downtown area.
