A man was arrested after an incident in downtown Victoria Friday morning where a shirtless man tried to pull a woman out of her car.

Shortly before 11 a.m., Victoria police were called to the intersection of Douglas and View streets for a report of a shirtless man running in and out of traffic.

A woman was stopped at the intersection of Douglas and View streets when the man entered her vehicle through the driver’s side window and attempted to force her out of the car, police said. The woman suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the assault.

Bystanders intervened, causing the suspect to flee on foot, police said. One of the bystander followed the suspect and provided officers with updates on his location and description.

Officers arrested the man in the 700-block of Pandora Avenue and the suspect was transported to hospital for medical treatment due to drug intoxication.

After he is released from hospital, the man will be held in custody for court, police said. In addition to the attempted carjacking, the man was also arrested for assault and breach of probation stemming from a separate recent incident.

The file remains under investigation.
