A packed house did the expected Sunday and acclaimed Sheila Malcolmson as the NDP candidate for an upcoming provincial byelection in Nanaimo.

Malcolmson is the NDP MP for Nanaimo-Ladysmith but is stepping down from federal politics to run provincially.

The provincial seat was left vacant when NDP MLA Leonard Krog stepped aside in the wake of being elected mayor of Nanaimo.

The B.C. Green Party chose retired teacher Michele Ney on Saturday as its candidate in the byelection.

Tony Harris will run for the Liberals and Robin Richardson will run for the Vancouver Island Party.

No date for the byelection has been announced, but Premier John Horgan has said it will come in advance of February’s budget.
