The Masjid Al-Iman, the only mosque on Vancouver Island, is opening its doors for B.C. Open Mosque Day on Saturday.

The B.C. Muslim Association has united major mosques from across B.C. to host the open house event.

The association has found the annual events to be an opportunity to bridge the gap between Muslims and non-Muslims.

Mosques help newcomers to learn about Canadian culture and make connections with the broader community through orientation sessions.

They also offer education sessions to local groups that sponsor refugees — such as the recent resettlement of Syrian refugees. The sessions help make people aware of Muslim culture and faith practices.

At Saturday’s event, volunteers will give tours of the mosque and include a display about Islam and Muslims. A chance to try on hijabs is also planned.

Temporary henna tattoos and complimentary snacks will be offered.

Head covering is not compulsory, but is appreciated. Most mosques require shoes and slippers to be taken off when entering the main prayer areas that are carpeted.

The open house runs 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Masjid Al-Iman, 2218 Quadra St.
