Island Health records 112 COVID-19 cases over the weekend, 1,434 reported in B.C.

The province announced 1,434 new cases of COVID-19 over the weekend, including 112 new cases in Island Health. The daily case counts — 532 on Saturday, 441 on Sunday and 461 on Monday — are a drop from the 717 cases reported on Friday.

The province announced 1,434 new cases of COVID-19 over the weekend, including 112 new cases in Island Health.

The daily case counts — 532 on Saturday, 441 on Sunday and 461 on Monday — are a drop from the 717 cases reported on Friday.

On Monday there were 5,090 active cases of COVID-19 in the province, including 307 in Island Health.

Of the active cases in B.C., 104 individuals are in hospital. Of those, 47 are in intensive care.

Vaccination rates are creeping up slowly, with 82.6 per cent or 3.8 million of eligible people 12 and older in B.C. having received their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine and 73.2 per cent fully vaccinated with two doses.

Interior Health continues to be a hotbed of new cases, accounting for 734 — more than half — of the new cases. It has 2,982 active cases.

Over the three-day period there was one new death in the province, in Fraser Health, for a total to date of 1,780.

There were 10 active outbreaks in long-term care and assisted or independent living, down from 11 on Friday.

Discovery Harbour in Campbell River is among the facilities with outbreaks. As of last week, just 60 per cent of staff were vaccinated.

Staff in long-term care and assisted living have until Oct. 12 to be vaccinated as part of an order from the provincial health officer. Volunteers and service providers who are unvaccinated cannot enter seniors homes.
