An injured man was found in the area where a 21-year-old man ran from the scene of what seems to have been an attempted theft of a pickup truck in Parksville on Wednesday, Oceanside RCMP say.

“It appears that the vehicle was in the process of being stolen and that our injured party attempted to intervene in that,” said Sgt. Stephen Rose. “It’s still unclear whether he jumped onto or into or was hanging from [the vehicle].”

The 28-year-old injured man had to be airlifted to hospital, and remains in critical but stable condition, police said. The incident happened about 4:05 p.m. near Wembley and Reid roads.

Rose said the driver was located and taken into custody. He was due to appear in Nanaimo provincial court on Thursday.

“We’re asking that anyone who hasn’t spoken to police already and may have witnessed the incident, or has video of the driver who fled, to contact our office so we can speak with them further,” Rose said.
