Brotherston is charged with the aggravated assault and robbery of a Sooke man and with breaking into a house at 6191 Sooke Rd. to commit an assault.

The offences are alleged to have occurred Feb. 9.

Sooke RCMP Staff Sgt. Jeff McArthur said police responded to a home invasion in which a man was severely beaten by two men early Saturday.

The man, who was home alone, received serious injuries to his face and head, McArthur said. He was taken to hospital, treated and released, and is recovering from his injuries at home.

On Feb. 11, Sooke RCMP, with the assistance of West Shore RCMP, arrested Brotherston.

Sooke RCMP are putting out an urgent plea for public assistance in the matter, McArthur said.

“We’re looking for more information on a second suspect,” he said.

The RCMP also want to talk to anyone who saw two people in a vehicle in the area near Edward Milne Community School between 1:30 and 2 a.m. on Saturday.

McArthur did not want to comment on whether the injured man knew his attackers or whether a weapon was involved. He also did not comment on a possible motive.

A bail hearing for Brotherston, who is in his late 30s, has been scheduled for Feb. 21 in Western Communities provincial court.
