The Greater Victoria School District is looking at a proposal to develop a new gender identity and expression policy.

The Greater Victoria School District has decided to postpone possible passage of its budget due to the discovery of 215 children’s bodies at the Kamloops Indian Residential School.

A meeting had been scheduled for Monday evening, with a second meeting Tuesday if needed.

The move was made “in respect and solidarity for the overwhelming grief being experienced by the Indigenous community,” said Greater Victoria School Board chair Jordan Watters.

The budget process has generated controversy as the board has grappled with a $7-million deficit that could lead to cuts affecting such things as music programs and family counsellors.

Budget deliberations have been rescheduled for Wednesday. A second meeting will be held Thursday if required.
