A man who tried to evade police by running onto the tidal flats of the Gorge Waterway on Tuesday afternoon became bogged down in knee-deep mud and surrendered.

Around noon, Victoria police patrol officers saw a man, who was wanted for breaching his probation, riding a bicycle along Gorge Road East. They stopped him and told him he was under arrest for the breaches, which stemmed from domestic violence incidents.

The man raced off on his bicycle, then jumped off and ran away on foot.

The officers gave chase, following the man as he ran through a wooded area and onto the tidal flats of the Gorge Waterway. The officers chased him until the man could go no farther in the knee-deep mud. He was arrested without incident.

The man was driven to the Victoria police station and placed in cells. He is being held in custody on the warrants.

Police said the file remains under investigation.
