Gas prices drop below $1 a litre in Greater Victoria

It's finally happened: Gas prices have dropped below $1 per litre for regular fuel throughout the capital region.

The majority of stations coming in below a loonie are charging 99.9 cents per litre, according to Gasbuddy.com, an online site tracking fuel prices.

As of late afternoon Thursday, the lowest price in the capital region was at Costco, a leader in lower prices, at 95.9 cents per litre.

According to Gasbuddy.com, Greater Victoria prices last dipped below $1 in early 2016.

Victoria is following other B.C. cities, which in late March saw prices drop below $1 per litre, including Nanaimo, Vancouver and Prince George. Several Nanaimo stations were at 85.9 cents per litre on Thursday.

GasBuddy.com’s blog said this week: “The situation we are in is unprecedented. The coronavirus is going to determine how long this will last, making it tricky to forecast what gas prices will be when businesses are reopened, schools are back in session, and when toilet paper will be consistently available in stores.”
