A fundraising campaign is underway to help a Victoria couple who lost their home, two cats and most of their belongings in a fire last week.

Three fire engines and 19 Victoria firefighters were called to the “aggressive” blaze on Cameron Street about 1:50 a.m. Friday.

Two residents escaped the fire. Two pet cats were located, but did not survive despite attempts by fire crews to resuscitate them. Another cat has since been located and another is still missing.

Damage is estimated at $300,000, according to fire officials. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The couple have lived in the house for more than three decades.

Friends have launched an online fundraiser to help the couple. About $7,500 had been raised as of Monday evening.

Organizer Paul Shortt said the fundraiser is meant “to help them financially in any way we can during this crisis.”

Shortt, who lives near the couple, said they are well known in the Fernwood community. “They are well known and well loved … really good people,” he said.
