The wildfire burning in the vicinity of Mount Prevost near Duncan is still classified as out of control but has not spread over the past few days despite windy conditions.

The fire, known as the Copper Canyon fire, is burning about 13 kilometres north of Duncan near Holyoak Creek, said B.C. Wildfire Service information officer Dorthe Jakobsen.

Despite winds of about 40 kilometre an hour Saturday, crews were able to keep the fire at 32 hectares, Jakobsen said.

A state of local emergency remains, said Cowichan Valley Regional District spokesman Kris Schumacher.

The size of the crew and number of pieces of equipment on Sunday were similar to Saturday, when there were 30 firefighters and three water tenders.

The fire is burning in difficult terrain, Schumacher said.

“It’s quite steep, third-growth forest,” he said. “It poses some challenges as far as accessibility.”

A crew was called in Saturday to parachute to a tough spot, Schumacher said. “There is access road through the North Cowichan Municipal Forest Reserve but it’s a long drive to get into that point.”

So far, just one house has been evacuated and no other evacuation alerts or orders have been issued, he said.

“I think people are just waiting to see, but I think at this point we don’t have any indications that it’s looking like it’s going to spread.”
