No one was injured early Monday when fire destroyed a trailer on a rural property in Campbell River next to a forest.

The lone resident was found safe at another location.

Campbell River Deputy Fire Chief Kelly Bellefleur said that the extra-dry conditions in the area added an element of risk.

“That was something that was on the mind of the officer in charge,” he said.

There was a threat of wildfire from the blaze “but crews managed to keep it from getting the trees going,” Bellefleur said.

Another resident of the property called the fire department about 1 a.m. after hearing a high-pitched hissing sound that turned out to be propane leaking, he said

“When the crew arrived they found a single-wide trailer fully involved with flames from end to end,” Bellefleur said. “One of the challenges of the fire was the trailer had a 300-pound propane tank right beside it, and flames were impinging on the tank — it was venting propane and burning off.”

The tank did not end up exploding.

An adjacent barn was burning when fire crews arrived but it was quickly extinguished.

Since the fire required so much attention, the Oyster River Fire Department was called in on standby in case any other calls came in.
