A brush fire broke out near a long-term care facility in Duncan on Sunday but firefighters extinguished the flames before they could spread to neighbouring properties.

The fire was discovered about 12:30 p.m. on an embankment behind a business in the 900-block of Canada Avenue. Smoke wafted into the Cairnsmore Place care home, forcing some residents to be moved to another wing of the facility.

Firefighters from the Duncan Volunteer Fire Department and the North Cowichan Fire Department tackled the fire, which had spread into some fir trees, said deputy fire chief Ray Watson of the Duncan department.

The fire, which measured about 100 feet by 200 feet in size, was quickly extinguished.

Watson said it’s unclear what caused the fire but he suspects it might be connected to people who have been camping at the base of the embankment.

A similar fire broke out in the area two weeks ago, he said.
