The Victoria Fire Department is crediting sharp-eyed Victorians and its own crews for minimizing the scale of a brush fire Monday evening along Dallas Road.

According to deputy fire chief Chris Royle, the department had about 30 calls around 8 p.m. Monday reporting a fire at Holland Point Park near the intersection of Dallas Road and South Turner Street.

The department sent two engines, a rescue unit and command vehicle to the scene and quickly extinguished the blaze.

Royle said the fire grew to cover an area of about 200 square feet, but they do not yet know what caused the blaze.

“It’s still under investigation,” he said, adding conditions remain dry and open burning is not allowed in private yards or parks. “So we are reminding the public to be cautious out there when disposing of things like cigarettes.”
