Swimmers, boaters and pet owners are being warned to avoid areas of Elk and Beaver lakes after water tests revealed a blue-green algae bloom.

The Capital Regional District advises users of Elk/Beaver Lake Regional Park in Saanich to avoid areas of the lakes showing a visible blue-green sheen or surface scum.

Dogs should be kept on a leash to prevent them from swimming or drinking the lake water.

According to Health Canada, blue-green algae produces toxins known to attack the liver and nervous system. Children and pets are most at risk.
