Victoria city councillors have voted to look for more potential locations for a communal shelter next to Beacon Hill Park.

A proposal to put it on Avalon Street drew concern from area residents this week. About 20 people gathered near the site on Tuesday to voice their concerns about the proposal to Coun. Stephen Andrew.

Increased crime and drug use were among the issues put forward.

The Avalon location would have required closing the roadway to vehicles near Douglas Street, and the removal of 13 resident-only parking spaces.

The shelter, to be called the Meegan Community Care Tent, aims to assist people who shelter in the park by providing food, clothing and harm-reduction services.

Cook Street near the entrance to the park’s works yard is one spot that will be looked at.
