Victoria Coun. Geoff Young is calling for an end to 24-hour-a-day camps in Beacon Hill Park and other approved locations.

In a motion headed to a committee of the whole meeting on Thursday, Young recommends that, as of June 25, the city begin enforcing rules that require campers to pack up each morning by 7 a.m.

He also calls for immediate measures to remove tents that are unoccupied for 24 hours, limit the number of tents to one per person or group, and prohibit camps with furniture, pallets and trailers capable of highway travel.

Council decided in May to allow people without homes to continue camping in Beacon Hill Park and other locations until at least June 25 without having to pack up their belongings each morning.

Bylaw officers stopped enforcing overnight sheltering rules during the COVID-19 outbreak so that people have a place to stay and self-isolate.
