A Colwood daycare was evacuated this morning after police surrounded a nearby house with guns drawn.

Kim Coy, owner of Sunshine Early Childhood Centre in the 2200-block of Sooke Road, made the decision to evacuate the daycare at 9:15 a.m. when she saw the armed police presence at a home in the Hatley Ridge townhouse complex across the street.

“There were four cars with police and weapons drawn,” Coy said. “For safety, we withdrew the kids from the property.”

The 40 kids and nine staff members got on a bus and went to Juan de Fuca park and the kids were unaware of the police incident, she said. The children returned by 11:30 a.m.

West Shore RCMP has not yet said what prompted the police response.

Coy first called West Shore RCMP last week about the same home after the tenants came onto her property and were acting suspiciously. In both cases, Coy was told it was a domestic incident and no arrests were made.

“This is the second time in five days we’ve had a police presence at this house and there have been no arrests,” she said.

Coy said she has contacted Proline Management to express concerns about the tenants.
