Saanich police are investigating a robbery early Thursday in which a hotel clerk was injured by two masked men who leaped over the front counter.

The clerk was working at the Howard Johnson Hotel and Suites on Elk Lake Drive about 4 a.m. when the men entered.

Police said the intruders “forcefully restrained” the clerk, injuring him, and took a “substantial” amount of money.

“It’s pretty brazen,” said Saanich Det.-Sgt. Damian Kowalewich.

He said the clerk is expected to make a full recovery. “He’s back in the community receiving resources and support services from Saanich police.”

A hotel surveillance video shows two men dressed in black clothing approaching the door from the outside. Once inside, they jump over the counter and grab the clerk, pulling him into a back area.

Kowalewich said police don’t yet know how the suspects made their getaway.

“It’s unknown how the suspects departed or if there’s any other individuals involved, given that the employee was left by the suspects restrained.”

After the robbery, a hotel guest heard the clerk’s calls for help and was able to assist him.

One of the robbers is described as white, in his 20s and five-foot-nine. The other is a slightly taller white man in his 20s.

Saanich police ask anyone with information to call them at 250-475-4356.
