Charges are being considered against a Nanaimo RCMP officer in connection with the arrest and detention of a woman who suffered serious injuries on Dec. 2, 2018.

On Monday, the Independent Investigations Office of B.C. said it had sent a report of its investigation to the B.C. Prosecution Service.

Ronald MacDonald, chief civilian director of the IIO, determined that reasonable grounds exist to believe that an officer may have committed offences in relation to the alleged application of force by a police officer.

As a result, the IIO has forwarded a report to the B.C. Prosecution Service for consideration of charges.

To approve the charges, the prosecution service must be satisfied that, based on the evidence gathered by the IIO, there is a substantial likelihood of conviction and that prosecution is required in the public interest.

The IIO said it will not be making any additional comment about the facts of this case.

The office is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in B.C.. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
