Cat has leg amputated after suffering gunshot wound

A Burmese cat had a leg amputated after it was wounded by bullet from a .22-calibre gun in a “troubling and unusual incident” in North Saanich, police say.

Sidney/North Saanich RCMP say Karen Halkett let her cat, Frankie, outside at about 4 p.m. Monday in the area of Baxendale Road.

When Frankie had not returned four hours later, Halkett went looking and found the cat hiding in her van.

A visit to a veterinarian revealed that Frankie had been shot. She underwent surgery Wednesday to amputate one of her legs due to the bullet wound.

“This is a concerning report and one that we take very seriously,” Const. Meighan de Pass, the detachment’s media relations officer, said in a news release.

“Causing suffering to an animal and the careless use of a firearm are serious offences, both of which we are investigating fully.”

Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact Sidney/North Saanich RCMP at 250-656-3931.
