A campfire ban on northern Vancouver Island is being lifted but remains in place in the south.

Campfires smaller than 50 centimetres across will be allowed north of Union Bay on the east coast and Nootka Sound on the west coast starting at noon Friday. Tiki torches, chimineas and outdoor stoves or portable campfires are also permitted.

Category two and category three open fires remain prohibited in all areas, as do fireworks, sky lanterns, burn barrels and burn cages.

Although fire danger ratings have declined in much of the coastal fire centre region due to recent rainfall and cooler temperatures, the public should continue to exercise extreme caution with any campfire and check for local restrictions.

Penalties for breaking the ban includes fines of up to $100,000 and up to one year in jail. If a wildfire results, the person responsible may be ordered to pay all firefighting and associated costs.
