Campbell River RCMP say they received at least 10 calls for service from the local carnival Saturday night, largely due to intoxicated patrons.

Their night began when a seemingly intoxicated 24-year-old man began “bothering almost everyone in sight,” which led to large fight in a nearby parking lot. He was found to have warrants and was taken into custody.

There was a similar situation with a 26-year-old woman who walked away from the carnival while screaming and waving her arms at passersby. An officer arranged a safe ride home for her.

About 10:20 p.m., an 18-year-old male who was trying to fight random people was bear-sprayed in the face. He did not identify his attacker to police.

“It’s disheartening that fun events like carnivals have to be ruined by a few people who think it’s an excellent place to demonstrate their drunken or drugged-out prowess in fighting or flirting,” said Const. Maury Tyre.
