Quadra Street between Saanich Road and McKenzie Avenue was closed for about an hour Tuesday morning as Saanich Fire Department dealt with a fire in a basement suite.

Occupants of an upstairs suite alerted the fire department when their smoke detectors sounded.

Firefighters who attended about 9:55 a.m. discovered a smoldering couch.

“We believe it was due to the careless use of a candle,” said assistant deputy fire chief Michael Kaye. “No investigation is contemplated at this time.”

He could not say if the downstairs suite had an operating smoke detector.

The occupants were evacuated safely and there were no reported injuries, but the downstairs suite sustained both smoke and water damage.
