B.C. Transit has applied to the Town of View Royal for rezoning to allow for a new handyDART facility.

Transit announced in November that it was considering buying the property at 2401 Burnside Rd. W., near the intersection with Watkiss Way. The existing facility on Glanford Avenue is beyond its capacity.

The eight-acre site would be used for operations and maintenance for the 56-vehicle handyDART fleet. HandyDART is a door-to-door transit service for people with disabilities. Nearly 393,000 individual trips were taken with handyDART in 2016-17.

B.C. Transit had hoped to locate its facility so the Victoria Bowmen Archery Club could continue to use the site, but has determined that won’t be possible. It said it is committed to working with the club to find it a new place to set up.

Part of the property will remain as green space and will contain a portion of the Galloping Goose Regional Trail.

An open house to explain the project is planned for 6-8 p.m. Feb. 20, at Eagle View Elementary School, 97 Talcott Rd.
