B.C. recorded 54 new COVID-19 infections in the past day and its first virus-linked death in a week.

The province had gone six days without a known COVID-19 death. B.C.’s death toll from the pandemic stands at 1,761.

Island Health reported five new cases and now has 29 active cases.

The 54 new cases were the highest daily total since last week. Counts for new cases during the week had declined to as few as 30 on Monday, and they remain significantly below totals a month ago, when it was common to see more than 100 new cases a day.

There are 650 known active cases of COVID-19 in B.C. Most are self-isolating, but 63 people are in hospital — the lowest number since Oct. 2. Twelve people are in intensive care.

Another 6,919 British Columbians received a first dose of vaccine in the past day, while 62,503 others received a second dose.

In total, 3,681,088 people have now had at least one shot of vaccine, the province said, and 2,253,818 of people are fully vaccinated.
