VANCOUVER — B.C. Hydro is warning customers about an email scam that tricks their customers into providing their banking information.

On Friday, the company said it had received dozens of reports of new scam emails that “spoof” a B.C. Hydro email address, sending messages that appear to be from B.C. Hydro, but are not.

In these messages, customers are directed to click a link to access their account refund by submitting their banking information.

However, B.C. Hydro warns that this is a scam and that it does not offer refunds through Interac e-transfer.

Customers should be wary of any messages that seem suspicious or unexpected, including an unexpected email that references account or billing status that seems to be incorrect.

B.C. Hydro does not collect credit card or bank account information by email.

Those who doubt the authenticity of an email are asked to call B.C. Hydro, and report suspected fraud to their local police department and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
