B.C. Ferries is running a month-long pilot program with late-night sailings between the Lower Mainland and Nanaimo to serve the commercial sector.

The sailings will be on the Duke Point-Tsawwassen run between Sept. 7 and Oct. 7 on the Queen of New Westminster.

The ferry will leave Tsawwassen at 9:15 p.m. and leave Duke Point at 12:15 a.m. Monday through Thursday nights.

The extra sailings are in response to increased demand for commercial goods fuelled by online shopping, as well as groceries and general freight, B.C. Ferries said Wednesday.

Food service will not be offered on the sailings.

There is expected to be room for a limited number of non-commercial vehicles on the main car deck. B.C. Ferries recommends booking in advance.

The corporation says it will evaluate customer response and feedback to the month-long trial.
