A rescue dog adopted this past summer by a Colwood woman has been seized and is being assessed after it bit three people early Saturday.

RCMP said they and paramedics answered a call for a dog attack at a house in the 3000 block of Pickford Road about 12:30 a.m. Several people, including children, were at the house at the time.

Kyla Johnson, 22, who lives in the basement suite of the house with her fiancé, said she adopted Rex, a four-year-old pit bull, last summer.

She needed three stitches after the dog bit both her arms, a leg and abdomen.

Johnson said people were visiting and playing a Tour of Duty video game. Some people were drinking beer and getting loud.

She said her dad kept losing and yelling, and Rex got upset.

Johnson said she told everyone to quiet down and Rex settled down. But her father tried to rough-house with Rex, she said, and the dog bit his arm.

She tried to pull the dog off and was bitten herself. At that point, everyone was shouting, and Rex bit at least one other person.

Other members of her family living upstairs became alarmed and evacuated the entire house.

Johnson called police, but said that when she climbed out a window to meet them, it wasn’t for fear of Rex. She wanted to ask the officers not to shoot him.

Rex was always “a good dog,” she said.

Johnson added she knew when she adopted the rescued dog that she had to be careful. She now believes Rex might have been abused in the past.

RCMP said none of the children at the house was injured but the Ministry of Children and Families was contacted to review the incident.

A bylaw officer had to use a control pole to capture the dog.

One man was arrested after he removed his shirt and attempted to fight with officers, police said.
