CLEWS, Dr. Hetty

Of Victoria, British Columbia passed away with family at her side on Monday, November 5, 2012 in the Royal Jubilee Hospital. Born in Rowley Regis, Birmingham, UK, July 18, 1929, to Wilfred and Florence Minnie Upton, Hetty was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was also an acclaimed actor, singer, author, director, and educator. She completed her BA in Theology at the University of Birmingham and a BEd, MA, and PhD in English at the University of Saskatchewan. Her passion for the theatre led her to be involved with the Saskatoon Summer Players, the Gateway Players, ArtSpring, the Langham Court Theatre, and numerous other theatre companies-a testament to her love of supporting community access to the arts. An active volunteer, Hetty regularly dedicated her time to such causes as hospice, libraries, and the environment. She held great comfort in her faith, and was a lay minister both in England and on Salt Spring Island, BC. Hetty was an excellent cook, a whiz at Scrabble, and had a beautiful voice, which she was not afraid to use, whether it was to welcome friends and family into her presence, or to sing. Everyone who knew her knew how she loved people, and her secret chocolate stash was never a secret for too long in her household. Hetty is survived by her husband of 59 years Dr. Alan Clews; her son Simon (Susan), her daughters Alison (Bob), Margaret (Sheldon), Madeleine (Hugh); her grandchildren Sarah (Geoffrey), Rachel (Adam), Katherine (Dave), Justin (Kimi), Sam (Ashley), Emily, Erin, and Laura; and her great-grandchildren Colin, Ryan, and Julian. CRAWSHAW, B. Louise

Born Dec. 4, 1914 in Lake Valley, Saskatchewan. Died Nov. 1, 2012 at Oak Bay Lodge, Victoria, BC. Louise was a quiet, supportive and caring mother with an abiding ability to sense when family and friends needed her. Somehow, she knew to materialize at just the right moment and step away when the need had passed. Like the rest of her family, Louise was a great story teller whose tales sometimes elicited groans, but always reminded her children that they were loved. She was also much loved by countless friends, her siblings, grandchildren and, in the last few years, great-grandchildren. While much of her family lived outside of Victoria - where she lived for the last forty years - Louise kept family connections strong throughout the years. Louise was a passionate reader and loved the written word. She always seemed to know exactly what her children were reading in school and enjoyed discussing books with them; it was her way of encouraging her children to love reading, too. She also passed her love of reading onto her grandchildren who amassed sizable book collections, thanks to Louise. It was easy for them to remember which ones she'd given, thanks to her habit of inscribing the inside of the cover with 'Love, Nana and Papa." Louise had many hobbies and spent many happy hours making clothes for herself and her family. She did crossword puzzles in ink, always looking for more challenges. She was always curious and ready to learn more about the world, even in her last years when she could no longer remember what she learned for very long. Like her family, Mom had a killer sense of humour and could be counted on to crack wise in tense moments, particularly over the last few years of her life. She and her husband, Tom, believed that a sense of humour was more than jokes; it was also about seeing yourself in perspective in the world. They could be counted on to remind their-kids of that if they got "too big for their britches." Over these last years, Louise also became very observant and appreciative of tree trunks and enthusiastic in her exclamations on their beauty. When asked why, she thought maybe it was because they, like humans, became wrinkled and gnarled! Louise appreciated family visits, hugs, chocolates, Scotch, shortbread and truly lived in the moment with her family. She had very large soft spots for grandchildren and great-grandchildren throughout her family. Louise leaves to mourn: her daughter, Lynne and son, Michael; Lynne's son, Ian (Kyrie); great grandsons, Abhainn and Fearghus; Michael's daughters, Caitlin (Gail) and Ceara (Mike) and son, Cameron; her brother, Bud Ferguson's children George, Judy and Brenda, and their families. Louise was predeceased by her husband, Tom in 1999; and 7 year-old son, Ian David, in 1954. Louise and Tom were deeply affected by Ian David's death. The deaths of her sisters, Ginie then Ruth, and her brother Bud deeply saddened her. Mom had many friends and sadly she was left to mourn the passing of many of them. She spoke of them with great affection, particularly her best friend from nursing days, Don Shaw.

Louise's funeral will be held at Cadboro Bay United Church, 2625 Arbutus Rd., on Monday, Nov. 12 at 2: 00 pm with reception to follow.

Your life was a blessing, your memory a treasure. You are loved beyond words, and missed beyond measure.

He was a man who met new challenges head on and always moved forward in all that he did. A devoted husband, father and friend, he was known for his great sense of all that was family. WESTMACOTT, Richard Antony

It is with great sadness that we announce that Tony died peacefully on November 6, 2012. Tony is survived by his loving wife, Magda, and daughters, Angela and Cheryl, and dear friend Cherry Mills who was like another daughter to him. Tony was born in London, England on September 28, 1919. He spent his early childhood in Mexico City where his father was a headmaster. His family later moved to Victoria where he attended St. Michael's University School. Tony went on to become a radio operator and worked for fisheries patrol on the west coast and for Trans-Canada Airlines in Winnipeg. He later joined the Department of Transport where he was involved in setting up airports across Canada. When the war broke out, Tony volunteered for the Ferry Command, a group of civilian pilots and navigators who courageously ferried bombers to Allied Forces around the world. He was one of the last surviving members. Following the war, Tony returned to work at the Dorval Airport as an Inspector of Licensing. He loved Montreal and it was there that he met Magda who was managing a book store. They were married in 1958. They were sad to leave Montreal when Tony accepted a promotion in Ottawa, where they stayed until his retirement. In 1974, Tony and Magda moved their family to Kelowna where they spent 15 years before finally settling in Victoria in 1989. Tony was well-travelled and had a keen interest in (and was often exasperated by) politics. He loved writing, music, and animals. Like his brother Ian, Tony was a talented musician, had a self-effacing, quiet charm, and a wonderful sense of humour. He will be greatly missed. Tony's family would like to thank Heather Fahr for her loving care and invaluable help over the years and all of the dedicated staff on A2 at Broadmead Lodge for their loving care and support.

No service by request. In lieu of flowers, Tony would have appreciated donations to any animal welfare charity, but particularly the Victoria Cat Rescue Corps.
