BAART, Christiaan Gerardus Johannes July 12, 1930 - November 21, 2012 Peacefully in his sleep at home.

BAART, Christiaan Gerardus Johannes July 12, 1930 - November 21, 2012

Peacefully in his sleep at home. Survived by sons Hans (Wendy) and Ron (Michelle), grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Brian, Chelsea and Jaxson Baart, Shelley, Brett, Layla and Rowan Gaylor, Daniel, Amanda, Sydney and Michael Baart, and his siblings Tiny (Adrian) op der Heijde (St. Albert, Alberta), Bill Baart, Mill Bay, and Jopie (Nico) Gijzen, Rotterdam and many nieces and nephews.

Dad (Chris, Opa) was born in Rotterdam, Holland. During the war years in occupied Holland he and his family learned to survive, particularly during the difficult hongerwinter. After the war, Dad continued with his studies which led him into the vocation of electronics technician. He became a member of the Volunteer Fire Department of Rotterdam following in the footsteps of his grandfather, father and many uncles and attained the rank of captain. He was married in 1954 to Aartje de Haan and in 1963 they immigrated with their family to Canada. After a few years in Edmonton, they settled in St. Albert. In 1968 the family arrived in Victoria and bought a house and thus began the reno years. When he wasn't renovating his and others homes he worked for B.C. Housing and the Audio/Visual Dept. of UVIC. Dad always maintained that there wasn't anything that could not be fixed or that you couldn't do. He was a good teacher and a hard worker. We will miss his quick wit and sense of humour. His hobby was photography which he enjoyed until his passing.

Thank you to Duncan Home Community Care for being there for him - he was very appreciative of the help.

Private Family Memorial at a later date.

CAVIN, Frances (nee Zareski)

November 10, 1926 - November 25, 2012 After a long illness, Fran passed away peacefully on a sunny Sunday morning, November 25, 2012, surrounded by the love of her family, after a short stay at Victoria Hospice. She was born in Welland, Ont. to John and Mary Zareski, the 6th of 7 children. After graduation from Welland High School, Fran trained at Hamilton General Hospital as a Lab Technician. Upon receiving her certificate in 1949 she travelled to Victoria to take a position at St. Joseph's Hospital, where she worked until shortly before the birth of her first child in 1952. In 1950 she met Gerald at the Catholic Youth Organization. They were married on Sept. 8, 1951 at St. Andrew's Cathedral in Victoria. Mom often said that after falling in love first with our mountains, and then her beloved Gerry, there was no going back to Ontario! After several years on Gorge Rd. West, Mom and Dad resided on Bank St. for 51 years until declining health prompted a move to Assisted Living at the Cridge Centre. Their Catholic faith being most important to them, they were devoted parishioners at St. Patrick's Church for over half a century. Fran is survived by her loving husband Gerry; sons Joe, Martin of Port Moody and Greg (Irene) of Kelowna; daughters Margaret and Mary; brother Tom (Ann) Zareski and sister Rose Zareski of Welland Ont.; sisters-in-law Mary DeVerteuil and Marg (Fred) Griffin of Victoria, and many nieces and nephews and their families throughout BC, Ontario and Nova Scotia. Prayers will be offered at St. Patrick's Church, 2060 Haultain St., on Friday December 7th at 7: 00 pm. The Funeral Mass will be held at the same location at 12: 10 pm on Saturday, December 8th, concelebrated by Frs. William Hill and Ian Stuart. A reception will follow in the adjoining Hall and interment at Ross Bay Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please direct your generosity to St. Patrick's Parish, the Victoria Hospice or The Cridge Centre for the Family. The family is very grateful to so many for the extraordinary support and care expended on Mom during her illness: Drs. Egan, Argouarch and McCracken, Veronica and Gail of VIHA, the management and staff of the Cridge Centre, particularly Steve and Jill, the many attentive caregivers of Beacon Home Services, especially Marilyn, Yolanda, Maggie, Septka and Lily, the Victoria Hospice team, and Fr. GRAHAM, Sylvia June 4, 1923 - November 11, 2012

Sylvia was born in Montreal in 1923 and moved with her family to England where she spent her school years in the village of Haddenham, west of London. During the Depression, her father, a distinguished engineer, took a cut in pay to keep others working in his firm and made up the shortfall as a market gardener, working alongside the housekeeper, the cook and the gardener who had come with the rented vicarage and had nowhere else to go in difficult times. This made a lasting impression on Sylvia and she was to spend the rest of her life working to help people in need without the slightest concern for where her station in life was presumed to be. She returned to Montreal in 1939 to study architecture at McGill University. Between terms she volunteered at her uncle's hospital in Wakefield Quebec where she met a young man from the Department of Foreign Affairs who was convalescing there, Colin Graham. They married in 1946 and moved to California where Colin studied art before moving to Victoria in 1951 to become the founding curator of the new Art Gallery of Greater Victoria. For more than 4 decades Sylvia worked tirelessly as a volunteer to support Colin and the Gallery, first as a member of the Women's Committee raising funds and organizing events, and later as a docent, bringing art to children in public schools. After Colin retired, they moved to Sidney where Sylvia continued her life of community service, driving the elderly to doctors' appointments, working to redress injustices to native communities and volunteering in the Beacon Community Services Thrift Shop to raise funds for community projects. She raised three boys, Alan, John and James, and took an active interest in all their endeavours. She was thrilled to have daughters when John married Pam (Sherwin) and James married Juliet, and when grandchildren arrived --first Tookie and Logan and later Daisy and Olive --she loved nothing more than to play with them when they were little and to hear of their many adventures and dreams as they grew. Whether with family, friends or complete strangers, Sylvia treated everyone with kindness and respect and was genuinely interested in everything around her. She died November 11, 2012 at the age of 89, still looking forward to her next adventure.

To celebrate her life, a tea will be held on Wednesday, December 5, at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, 1040 Moss St, from 2 - 4 pm. A special fund is being set up in her honour at the Gallery for those wishing to donate in her memory to a cause she held so dear.

RUMSBY, Judith Ann (Spencer) November 11, 1945 - November 26, 2012

It is with great sorrow that we announce the sudden and unexpected passing of our beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend, Judith Ann (Spencer) Rumsby on Monday, November 26th, 2012. Judy was devoted to her family and leaves behind a loving husband of 46 years Horace Burton Rumsby, daughter Tracey Edwards, son Aaron Rumsby and two grandchildren Natasha and Nicholas Edwards of whom she was so very proud. She also leaves to mourn, her dearest friend of many years, Flavio Lomeli, who was always there for her. Judy was a proud member of the RJH auxiliary and enjoyed many years of volunteering in the hospital gift shops. Spirited and intuitive, Judy had a thirst for knowledge. She enjoyed reading and was committed to lifelong learning. She loved being surrounded by nature and treasured her time spent at their cabin at Lake Cowichan. In recent years Judy enjoyed travelling the world, and took many cruises with those closest to her. Judy will be interred and laid to rest at Royal Oak Burial Park with her son Adam who was taken much too soon from this world (1972).

There will be no service as per her request but a Celebration of Life will be held at a future date. Judy's tenacious spirit will be forever in our hearts and we take comfort in knowing she is now at peace. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to either the Canadian Diabetes Association or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of BC in her name.

In Harold's early years, he lived above the Guysborough Post Office. Harold's mother Marion, a school teacher gave him a head start on his education. He excelled and in 1949 at 22, had a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Mathematics from Acadia University and a Masters in Physics from the University of Western Ontario. He was 23 when he arrived in Victoria on the afternoon ferry Dominion Day, July 1, 1950 to join the Pacific Naval Laboratory as Defense Scientist.

Little did he know that this would be his home for the rest of his life. In 1953 he met Teddy (Lesley Murray) as members of the Victoria Theatre Guild. In 1954, they married and went to Cambridge, England where Harold received his PhD in Physics. They returned to Victoria, September 1957 and shortly after arriving back at Pacific Naval Laboratories, Harold went on a lecture circuit to John Hopkins University, the University of Michigan, the National Bureau of Standards, Harvard, and MIT. Harold also excelled in his career; in 1961 working with the United States Navy, 1962 taking over Fluid Dynamics, 1966 Head - Marine Physics Section 1 and Head - Fluid Dynamics, 1973 Director - Physics Research, 1981 Chief - Defense Research Establishment Pacific (DREP) and in October 1985 - Retired. He remained in the home where they celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary until the last few weeks of his life. Harold was an avid gardener at Admirals Rd and Seamist Court, an ardent sailor - sailing an El Toro at the Canadian Forces Sailing Association (Esquimalt Squadron) and racing on the Gorge, Council President, Mattick's Green Strata and always with a keen interest in nature, science, and truth. There are many people to thank for their loving support for the last few years of his life. The family is extremely grateful to the Urquharts, the Van Der Leedens, the Godfreys, the Evans and B.

HANSON, Owen January 12, 1918 - November 25, 2012 Owen passed away peacefully from congestive heart failure at the Victoria General Hospital.

He was predeceased by his wife of 66 years, Pat, in June 2010 and his brother Paul. He is survived by son Gary (June) and daughter Karen (Michael) and their families. Owen's sister, Pearl McLean, continues her long life in Winnipeg, his brother-in-law Vaughan Patteson in Tsawwassen, and family friend Ellen Switzer in High River, AB.

Owen lived his 94 year life with honour, dignity and laughter. His early life in McCreary, MB was as close to 'heaven on earth' as a boy could want. After completing high school, he signed on with the Hudson's Bay Company and established a weather station north of the Arctic Circle at Walker Bay. After 2 years, WWII broke out, he enlisted in the RCAF and in 1940 went to England with the first squadron to be trained and recruited for overseas service. On his return to Canada, he requested a second posting back to England. However, while waiting, he met Edith Evelyn Patteson (Pat) and they were married after 3 weeks - a long courtship. Owen then became a Flight Instructor in Virden, MB.

With family in tow they moved to McCreary (aka 'heaven'), Dauphin, Yorkton and finally ended up in Victoria. Owen owned and operated a successful bus tour company, Capital Tours, where his hardworking staff and supportive cliental provided him many humourous stories from the travel business.

On retirement, Owen and Pat found a second 'heaven' in Sidney, BC. Many friendships developed over the years. Owen's favourite source of support was the 'Over Bloody Eighty' Coffee guys who meet three times a week at the Sidney Pier Hotel. The story is that it began as an Air Force Veterans group, but became so popular that a Navy guy and some others were 'let in'. In August of this year Owen moved into Broadmead Lodge. It was only when Owen found traveling to Sidney for these 'meetings' difficult that his family suspected that his health was failing. These men had become his lifeline.

Heartfelt thanks go out to all his friends, neighbours, doctors, nurses, and pharmacists who kept him going these last years. The family appreciates the knowledge and compassion given to Owen during his last months. Your caring and assistance is what makes our world a better place.

At his request there will be no formal service, however, Owen will be included in the November Memorial Service in the Oak Room at Broadmead Lodge, 4975 Chatterton Way on Friday, December 7 at 1: 30pm. Please join the family if you wish.

Donations to Saanich Peninsula Hospital, Victoria General Hospital or Broadmead Lodge would be an appropriate remembrance for Owen. (Many of you know that Owen excelled in renovating every home he lived in, and he thought that these recent institutions could use some reno help.)

McGOWAN, Margaret T. February 15, 1923 - November 27, 2012

Margaret is survived by her son Norman (Sue) of Kamloops BC, and grandson Paul of New Westminster. She was predeceased by her loving husband Douglas and her son Gordon; her sisters Letty (Jim) Long, Lilian (Harold) Pledger, and Dorothy (Mike) Dwyer, and by her brother Al (Dorothy) Norman. She is survived by her sisters in-law Maude Atkinson and Agnes Morelli, many nieces and nephews, and a special friend, Lyn Kumpala. Margaret was born in Camp Caycuse on Cowichan Lake, BC, where the children roamed free beneath summer skies. Her father, Henry Norman, was a high rigger logger who was in high demand as he taught and worked in the bush. During the depression he went to Russia, taking all his family, but promises meant nothing there and conditions were poor. When Margaret got scurvy he quickly moved his family back to the woods in the Cowichan Valley. Margaret absorbed the Russian language easily while there and acted as an interpreter for the adults. Henry carried Margaret to the sea where he found a boat willing to take the family to Canada. Margaret worked in a plywood plant in Victoria for 19 years and after her retirement she became a champion golfer, winning many trophies on the island, the mainland and other points in Canada. She was competing until the age of 75, also playing Bridge until then. It was not very exciting to just play golf until she was in her 80's but she sure had fun having her pick-up games at the Seniors Center where she played and whupped most of the men. Mom loved to travel to Europe and met relatives in Finland. She and Dad spent many happy winters as snow birds in Arizona and Southern California. Special thanks to the Sherwood House staff in Duncan, Jill Thomas and Kelly Norman for their excellent care. Lyn for her weekly visits during the summer and the many drives to the beaches and byways with Mom. Special thanks to Paramedics Luke and Bobbi, ER and 3 West staff and Dr. Ranier and Dr. Stoltze. Our Thanks to the staff at Kamloops Seniors Village for their care and compassion during the past few months.

There will be no service by request. A wake will be held in 2013, in Duncan, BC, date to be yet determined. Donations may be made to the charity of your choice.

SHELDRICK, Evelyn Grace October 30, 1928 - November 19, 2012

Evelyn passed away peacefully at home with her family by her side on Nov. 19th. Born in Macklin, Saskatchewan on Oct. 30, 1928, she grew up on the family farm in nearby Primate.

She had wonderful stories to tell about her early days on the prairies even though farm life was often difficult. When the family moved to Victoria in 1945, Evelyn began working at David Spencer's Department Store. There she met her future husband Mason Sheldrick and they were married in 1950. They started their family soon after and Lyn remained at home to raise their three daughters. Due to Mason's involvement in local lacrosse, she became an avid fan of the sport and was a regular at all the Shamrocks' home games. A very active member of First Baptist Church, Lyn served in several roles. She was a deacon and trustee for many years, a member of the choir for 65 years, and served on a variety of committees.

Known for her sense of humour, she also enjoyed telling jokes and performing skits and songs at church social events. Humour was a big part of her life. Quick to laugh and able to see the funny side of almost any situation, laughing until tears flowed was a common occurrence at home. The two most important things in Lyn's life were her family and her Christian faith. She was a strong woman with an optimistic yet practical outlook on life and she approached all of life's obstacles with grace, dignity and determination. Caring and compassionate, she was an inspiration to her family and many others whose lives she touched. Her greatest joys were spending time with family, working in her garden and being involved with her many different activities at the church; she also enjoyed watching lacrosse, reading, and doing crossword and jigsaw puzzles. Predeceased by her parents, Lyall and Alverta Beattie, husband Mason and sister Audrie, Lyn is survived by her loving daughters Janice, Tracey, and Dawn (Ken), granddaughter Paige, step-grandchildren Danielle and Liam and many cousins, nieces and nephews. She was much loved and will be deeply missed. Heartfelt thanks go to the members of First Baptist Church for their support and prayers during her illness and also to the wonderfully caring people at Victoria Hospice who were so helpful to both Lyn and her family during her final days.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, Dec. 7, 2012 at 2: 00 pm at First Baptist Church, 877 North Park St, Victoria BC, V8W 1S9, with Reverends Ken Hillmer and Gord Patterson officiating; a reception will follow.
