Get vaccinated right now so you can get together safely with your family for Thanksgiving, says provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry.

If you’re planning Thanksgiving dinner with family and friends, make sure everyone attending is vaccinated today, provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said Friday.

Thanksgiving Monday, a statutory holiday, is on Oct. 11.

“The advice is get vaccinated right now so that you can get together safely with your family,” said Henry.

With the highly transmissible COVID-19 Delta variant circulating, getting vaccinated is especially important if you’re getting together with older family members, she said. “Then you want to make sure that everybody who comes into your household is immunized.”

The Fraser, Interior and Northern health regions, where there is greater transmission and hospitalization with COVID, are subject to additional restrictions on how many people can gather indoors if they are not vaccinated. In those health regions, indoor personal gatherings in private residences are limited to the household plus five visitors or one other household, while outdoor personal gatherings at private residences are limited to the household plus up to 10 visitors, who must remain outside.

Anyone born in 2009 or earlier, regardless of whether they are a resident of B.C. or have a personal health number, can get vaccinated with or without an appointment. Second doses can be provided 28 days after the first.
