ST. JOHN’S, N.L. — Newfoundland and Labrador’s new Liberal government has officially been sworn in.

Premier Dwight Ball has named a 12-member cabinet of nine men and three women.

Cathy Bennett takes on the all-important finance portfolio and will also be responsible for the Treasury Board and the status of women, while Andrew Parsons is the new justice minister and attorney general.

Gerry Byrne is the education minister, Steve Crocker is the minister of fisheries and aquaculture, and John Haggie has been named health minister.

The Liberals won a strong majority, taking 31 of a possible 40 seats in last month’s provincial election.

The win ended 12 years of Progressive Conservative government.
