Mediator appointed in University of New Brunswick strike

FREDERICTON — The New Brunswick government is appointing a special mediator to try to end an ongoing strike by faculty at the University of New Brunswick.

FREDERICTON — The New Brunswick government is appointing a special mediator to try to end an ongoing strike by faculty at the University of New Brunswick.

Jody Carr, the province's minister of labour and post-secondary education, says Brian Keller will meet with both sides later this week in a bid to resolve the labour dispute that's now in its third week.

He says Keller was chosen from a list submitted by the school administration and faculty to get them back to the bargaining table and students back in the classroom.

Carr says Keller is an experienced mediator who has intervened in labour disruptions involving Air Canada, Canada Post, municipalities and other universities.

Picket lines were set up Jan. 13, closing classes at campuses in Fredericton, Saint John, Bathurst and Moncton following months of negotiations that failed to produce a collective agreement.

The union that represents the striking workers is at odds with the administration over wages and workload.
