Cate May Burton is the Green nominee in the riding of Berthier-Maskinonge, though she has no apparent connection to the community.
She is up against New Democrat Ruth Ellen Brosseau, who was a virtual unknown with little connection to the riding when she won it as part of the 2011 orange wave.
May Burton, 24, is completing a master’s degree in Halifax and has been travelling the country with her mother during the campaign.
The Greens are running in ridings throughout the country, but May Burton’s candidacy is indicative of the party’s struggle to establish roots in Quebec.
Julian Morelli, communications director for the party, said the Greens wanted to give all Canadians an opportunity to vote for them on Oct. 19.
May was one of just two Green MPs in the last Parliament and the party is hoping for enough members to make a difference in what could be a minority government.
